DUBAI // A teenager has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly stabbing another student who had insulted his mother.
AH, a Lebanese student, told prosecutors that on the evening of February 28, the Iraqi defendant YK, 19, pushed his chair towards the one on which AH was sitting in a gym. AH ignored the matter and headed towards the toilet, the Dubai Criminal Court heard yesterday.
The two gazed at each other and exchanged words before YK said he would break the victim’s head, and punched him repeatedly, the court heard.
AH threw the defendant to the floor, the court heard. YK left the area and, minutes later, sent a friend to AH, telling him that he wanted to settle the dispute outside.
They met in the presence of two witnesses outside of the gym, the court heard.
“‘Why did you insult my mother?’ YK asked me, and I told him he insulted my mother three times the day before,” the victim told the court.
“He made a very weird and loud scream, then stabbed me in the abdomen, then again towards the heart,” AH said, adding that he tried to run away but YK chased him and stabbed him again in the right arm.
The witnesses rushed to AH’s help and called for an ambulance. YK fled the scene, the court heard.
“I didn’t mean to kill him,” YK told the court, adding that AH, whose age was not in court records, had beat him up. “He said he would stick a knife up my behind so I took out my knife to scare him off.”
YK’s defence lawyer asserted that his client was a juvenile at the time of the fight, and should therefore be referred to juvenile court.
The court ordered the lawyer to provide a copy of YK’s passport to verify birth details. A defendant is legally considered an adult at age 18.
“He was born on May 18, 1993,” the lawyer said, which means YK would already have been 18 at the time of the altercation.
The lawyer requested to cross examine the testimony of witnesses. A date for the next hearing has not been set yet.

Coffee: black death or elixir of life?
It is among the greatest health debates of our time; splashed across newspapers with contradicting headlines - is coffee good for you or not?
Depending on what you read, it is either a cancer-causing, sleep-depriving, stomach ulcer-inducing black death or the secret to long life, cutting the chance of stroke, diabetes and cancer.
The latest research - a study of 8,412 people across the UK who each underwent an MRI heart scan - is intended to put to bed (caffeine allowing) conflicting reports of the pros and cons of consumption.
The study, funded by the British Heart Foundation, contradicted previous findings that it stiffens arteries, putting pressure on the heart and increasing the likelihood of a heart attack or stroke, leading to warnings to cut down.
Numerous studies have recognised the benefits of coffee in cutting oral and esophageal cancer, the risk of a stroke and cirrhosis of the liver.
The benefits are often linked to biologically active compounds including caffeine, flavonoids, lignans, and other polyphenols, which benefit the body. These and othetr coffee compounds regulate genes involved in DNA repair, have anti-inflammatory properties and are associated with lower risk of insulin resistance, which is linked to type-2 diabetes.
But as doctors warn, too much of anything is inadvisable. The British Heart Foundation found the heaviest coffee drinkers in the study were most likely to be men who smoked and drank alcohol regularly.
Excessive amounts of coffee also unsettle the stomach causing or contributing to stomach ulcers. It also stains the teeth over time, hampers absorption of minerals and vitamins like zinc and iron.
It also raises blood pressure, which is largely problematic for people with existing conditions.
So the heaviest drinkers of the black stuff - some in the study had up to 25 cups per day - may want to rein it in.

Gertrude Bell's life in focus
A feature film
At one point, two feature films were in the works, but only German director Werner Herzog’s project starring Nicole Kidman would be made. While there were high hopes he would do a worthy job of directing the biopic, when Queen of the Desert arrived in 2015 it was a disappointment. Critics panned the film, in which Herzog largely glossed over Bell’s political work in favour of her ill-fated romances.
A documentary
A project that did do justice to Bell arrived the next year: Sabine Krayenbuhl and Zeva Oelbaum’s Letters from Baghdad: The Extraordinary Life and Times of Gertrude Bell. Drawing on more than 1,000 pieces of archival footage, 1,700 documents and 1,600 letters, the filmmakers painstakingly pieced together a compelling narrative that managed to convey both the depth of Bell’s experience and her tortured love life.
Books, letters and archives
Two biographies have been written about Bell, and both are worth reading: Georgina Howell’s 2006 book Queen of the Desert and Janet Wallach’s 1996 effort Desert Queen. Bell published several books documenting her travels and there are also several volumes of her letters, although they are hard to find in print. Original documents are housed at the Gertrude Bell Archive at the University of Newcastle, which has an online catalogue.
