DUBAI // A businessman had almost six kilograms of crystal methamphetamine hidden in false bottoms of his suitcases at Dubai airport, customs officials revealed yesterday.
A team of inspectors followed the passenger, from an unidentified Asian country, after he landed at Dubai International Airport on New Year's Eve.
"When the passenger approached the customs area at Terminal One, inspectors emptied his bags of clothes and scanned it to discover an unusual unevenness in the bottom," said Ali Al Mugahwi, the director of airport operations at Dubai Customs.
Mr Al Mugahwi said that layers of plaster and sponge found in the man's luggage concealed bags of an icy-looking substance, which the mobile drug laboratory identified as crystal meth.
One bag weighed 2.95kg and another 2.8kg.
"When interrogated, the passenger claimed that the luggage belonged to another passenger who accompanied him during the flight and had already left the terminal," Mr Al Mugahwi said.
The businessman was handed over to the anti-narcotics department at Dubai Police.

WHAT IS GRAPHENE?
It was discovered in 2004, when Russian-born Manchester scientists Andrei Geim and Kostya Novoselov were experimenting with sticky tape and graphite, the material used as lead in pencils.
Placing the tape on the graphite and peeling it, they managed to rip off thin flakes of carbon. In the beginning they got flakes consisting of many layers of graphene. But when they repeated the process many times, the flakes got thinner.
By separating the graphite fragments repeatedly, they managed to create flakes that were just one atom thick. Their experiment led to graphene being isolated for the very first time.
In 2010, Geim and Novoselov were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics.
Explainer: Tanween Design Programme
Non-profit arts studio Tashkeel launched this annual initiative with the intention of supporting budding designers in the UAE. This year, three talents were chosen from hundreds of applicants to be a part of the sixth creative development programme. These are architect Abdulla Al Mulla, interior designer Lana El Samman and graphic designer Yara Habib.
The trio have been guided by experts from the industry over the course of nine months, as they developed their own products that merge their unique styles with traditional elements of Emirati design. This includes laboratory sessions, experimental and collaborative practice, investigation of new business models and evaluation.
It is led by British contemporary design project specialist Helen Voce and mentor Kevin Badni, and offers participants access to experts from across the world, including the likes of UK designer Gareth Neal and multidisciplinary designer and entrepreneur, Sheikh Salem Al Qassimi.
The final pieces are being revealed in a worldwide limited-edition release on the first day of Downtown Designs at Dubai Design Week 2019. Tashkeel will be at stand E31 at the exhibition.
Lisa Ball-Lechgar, deputy director of Tashkeel, said: “The diversity and calibre of the applicants this year … is reflective of the dynamic change that the UAE art and design industry is witnessing, with young creators resolute in making their bold design ideas a reality.”
