DUBAI // Two men who were sentenced to seven years in prison for drug smuggling have been acquitted by the Appeals Court.
BM, 30, from Saudi Arabia, and NM, 22, an Emirati, were accused of smuggling almost 300,000 Captagon tablets into the country. Customs officers found the tablets in a shipment of clothes at Jebel Ali Port.
The man who came to collect the shipment claimed to know nothing about the drugs and implicated the other two men, who were arrested at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on July 24 last year.
In addition to the jail term the Criminal Court fined both men Dh50,000 and ordered the Saudi to be deported, but the Appeals Court overturned their convictions. The men had professed their innocence throughout both trials.
