A lovelorn man who slapped an estranged friend with a shoe after she refused his hand in marriage has received a three-month prison sentence.

The Indian student, 21, cut off contact with the Pakistani man, 25, after he refused to accept they could only be friends.

Dubai Criminal Court heard the pair had struck up a friendship via Facebook and shortly after he revealed his romantic intentions.

“I told him we were only friends, but he insisted so I stopped seeing him and talking to him,” said the victim.

The man continued to bombard her with calls, prompting her to go to his home on August 26 to discuss her concerns with his father.

But after she parked her car and walked towards the family home in Al Muhaisnah, he spotted her and bundled her into his car.

He locked the doors of the car, hit the woman and snatched her phone out of her hand to stop her from calling for help.

“He hit me with his hands, bit me on the right arm and hit me on the right cheek with a shoe. I jumped to the front seat and jumped out of the car,” she said.

She fled to her home and told her father, who took her to the police station to report the incident.

A medical report confirmed she suffered partial hearing loss as a result of the assault.

The man denied attacking the woman at a previous court hearing.

He was convicted of assault at Dubai Criminal Court on Sunday.

He is to be deported at the end of the jail term.

He has two weeks to appeal the sentence.
