An arrested drug suspect attempted to bribe a policeman with Dh2 million to let him go, Dubai Criminal Court heard on Wednesday. The Pakistani accused, 30, was being questioned by police for his alleged involvement in promoting drugs on October 25 last year when he made the bribe. “I was questioning him at the anti-narcotics department when he spoke to me in Pashto offering me the money,” the officer told prosecutors. The man allegedly offered to pay the officer Dh2m in return for his help. The policeman said he played along and asked the man how he would be paid. “[The accused] asked if the other officers understood Pashto and I told him ‘no’, to lure him into talking further about the bribe.” The accused asked the policeman for his bank account number and promised to send him the money. “He told me he will send the bank details to some of his men in Pakistan and have them deposit the money in my account,” the officer said. The policeman filed a report, which led to the accused to be charged with offering a bribe. He denied the charge in court and will receive his verdict on August 30.
