Maid who locked up babysitter and fled with cash jailed by Dubai court

A maid who locked up a babysitter in a villa before running away with her cash is sentenced to three month in prison.

DUBAI // A maid who locked up a babysitter in a villa before running off with her cash, has been sentenced to three month in prison.

RA, 25, from Bangladesh, stole Dh3,000 from the purse of her Filipina co-worker before locking her and the baby into their sponsor's house in Mirdiff and running off.

"It was nearly 10am when I was with the baby in the sponsor's room when she locked up the door from the outside and left. I looked at her from the window and called for her but all she said was 'bye bye'," recalled the babysitter.

The babysitter was rescued when her employer returned and broke into his own home.

The sponsor of the two women, AA, 37, an Emirati, received a call from a neighbour telling him that his babysitter was banging on the window and screaming for help.

"I returned home and found the babysitter and the baby locked up so I broke the door and asked the babysitter what had happened," said the sponsor. The babysitter told him the maid had stolen Dh3,000 from her bag that she had been intending to send to her family.

The sponsor told the Criminal Court he hired the maid about six months before the incident took place on September 17 last year.

In court, the maid confessed to locking up the babysitter but denied theft.

RA will be deported after completing her jail term.
