DUBAI // Five men who posed as CID officers to kidnap a man and steal Dh140,000 from him were today sentenced to three years in prison each.
SH, a 24-year-old Emirati, YK, a 24-year-old Pakistani, and three Bangladeshis - NA, 27, MY, 22, and TA, 25 - were all found guilty by the Dubai Criminal Court, which ordered all of them except SH to be deported following the completion of their jail terms.
The court cleared four men - the two Bangladeshis SM, 25, and MA, 25, and the two Pakistanis RW, 29, and ZH, 22 - of the charges.
The 30-year-old victim had been sent by his employer to collect Dh141,653 of company funds from an unknown source at about 5pm on March 9 when he was stopped by a group of men wearing kandooras.
They told him they were CID officers and asked for his ID card. However, before he could take the card from his wallet the men bundled him into a car and took his mobile phone. They then took him out into the desert where they stole his money and smeared cream into his eyes to temporarily blind him before driving off.
However, the man managed to wipe some of the cream out of his eyes and write down the car's licence plate number.
Police arrested the men during a sting operation in which they robbed an African man.
