Dubai Police arrested a gang suspected of stealing a Dh1.3 million ($353,915) Lamborghini and trying to smuggle it out of the country. The gang plotted to steal several cars, officials said. A member of the gang posed as a customer and hired the Lamborghini from a car rental company. The man disappeared after leasing the car. The company filed a police complaint after it failed to locate the vehicle using its GPS. A team from the Criminal Analysis Centre and the Criminal Investigation Department was formed to investigate the case. "Our team skillfully utilised artificial intelligence technologies to arrest the suspects as they were trying to steal their first luxury car, which is worth Dh1.3m," said Lt Gen Abdullah Al Marri, Commander-In-Chief of Dubai Police. "The team was able to determine the car's location despite the gang members using modern techniques to hide it," said Brig Jamal Al Jalaf, director of the Criminal Investigation Department. Four men, all from Eastern Europe, were arrested. “Officers closely monitored the movements and activities of the suspects before they located and raided their residence,” he said. “They stayed at a luxurious residence.” Fake number plates and equipment used in forging number plates were seized. One of the accused was tasked with renting the cars, while the others forged number plates and documents to smuggle them outside the UAE.
