Four Asian men who posed as Dubai Police officers before kidnapping a gardener and robbing him of Dh200,000 have each been jailed for 10 years.
The gang, armed with handcuffs and walkie talkies, dragged the unsuspecting Pakistani victim out of his car and told him they were CID officers investigating a drugs case.
They snatched the 43-year-old's ID and mobile phone and that of a friend he was with at the time and bundled the pair into their car, insisting they were being taken to a police station.
Dubai Criminal Court heard the incident took place on August 8 of last year in the Hor Al Anz area of Dubai.
“It was around 9.30am when they took me and my friend who was with me, in a white Nissan Infiniti, claiming I was a suspect in a drug-related case,” said the man to judges.
The offenders, hailing from Pakistan, then stole the large sum of cash from the victim, which he was planning to deposit at the bank.
The criminals later stopped their car in a desert area and threw both men out of the vehicle, running over the gardener's arm as they sped away.
The victims alerted police who tracked down the perpetrators within a week.
In court last September, the defendants, aged between 28 and 31, denied charges of impersonating officers, kidnap, and theft.
At the latest hearing, they were convicted of all charges and fined Dh200,000 each in addition to their sentences.
They are to be deported at the end of their jail terms.
