Drunk Dubai tourist who spat on policeman jailed for insulting Islam

DUBAI // A drunk tourist who insulted Islam has been sentenced to two months in prison and fined Dh2,000.

LM, 28, from Holland, spat on two policemen and insulted their religion when they investigated her complaint about her purse being stolen.

The woman called police on January 4 at about 3.30am, reporting that a man had cut the strap of her bag and run off with it while she was walking on the Sheikh Zayed Road near Zaatar W Zeit.

But when officers answered her call she became abusive.

"She was drunk, I could smell alcohol on her," recalled Emirati policeman MA, 27. He said that when the woman finished giving details of the theft, she walked away but then turned her face and spat on the policemen.

"She also insulted our religion," he said.

The woman was charged with expressing contempt to police officers, insulting Islam and illegally consuming alcohol. She confessed to the alcohol charge but denied the other two.

The Misdemeanours Court found her guilty of all charges. She received a two-month jail term to followed by deportation for the two counts of insult. She was additionally fined Dh2,000 on the alcohol charge.
