DUBAI // A man who stabbed to death his mistress's husband has been sentenced to death.
RK, 23, from Sri Lanka, murdered a businessman identified as JP after he saw the couple walking hand-in-hand, court records show.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment at the Dubai Court of First Instance in April after prosecutors failed to prove the crime was premeditated. However, yesterday, Dubai Court of Appeals prosecutors succesfully argued premeditation.
The court was told RK waited in a narrow and poorly lit alleyway at night in the Jafilya area. He saw the husband walking with his wife, and stabbed him in the back. Records show JP chased the defendant and fought with him, butRK stabbed him in the chest and neck and escaped.
The court heard from a police officer who questioned the wife. He said she confessed to a relationship with RK. She also identified him as the killer.
Investigations revealed the defendant's mother, TK, who was hiding him in The Springs, bought a plane ticket for her son. He was arrested at her house.
His mother was arrested for aiding and abetting but the charges were later dropped. RK's case will now go to the Dubai Court of Cassation, the highest court.
