DUBAI // The Cassation Court today dismissed an appeal by the British property developer Safi Qurashi against a three-year sentence he is serving for bouncing cheques.
One of two convictions against the Briton for bouncing three cheques worth US$60 million in a deal to buy the Great Britain island in Nakheel's The World project was overturned by the court last week. That decision put an end to a seven-year jail term Qurashi was serving, but he remains in prison serving a three-year-sentence on the other charge. He has already spent two and a half years in jail.
Qurashi claims that he submitted the three cheques for the Great Britain island as security while the money transactions were completed but that the cheques were unlawfully cashed before the transactions could be completed. When the cheques bounced, he was prosecuted and jailed.
Court sources said that Qurashi would be appearing on another charge after a new report was lodged against him. The report claims he issued two cheques for nearly Dh6 million that subsequently bounced in a separate deal.
A date for the new court hearing has not be determined yet.

Electoral College Victory
Trump has so far secured 295 Electoral College votes, according to the Associated Press, exceeding the 270 needed to win. Only Nevada and Arizona remain to be called, and both swing states are leaning Republican. Trump swept all five remaining swing states, North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, sealing his path to victory and giving him a strong mandate.

The count is ongoing, but Trump currently leads with nearly 51 per cent of the popular vote to Harris’s 47.6 per cent. Trump has over 72.2 million votes, while Harris trails with approximately 67.4 million.
