ABU DHABI // A prison cleaner bought an inmate cigarettes in exchange for an Dh18 bribe, the Criminal Court heard yesterday.
The inmate at Al Wathba prison gave HJ, from Bangladesh, a Dh20 note. The cleaner then purchased Dh2 worth of cigarettes.
Prosecutors said he kept the change, but the cleaner denied this, saying he returned the Dh18 to the inmate.
Prisoners are limited in the amount of cigarettes they are allowed to purchase from the prison's canteen.
Prosecutors said the cleaner violated prison rules and committed an act outside his authority.
He was charged with accepting a bribe.
A verdict is expected on June 12.
