DUBAI // A 65-year-old man had his teeth knocked out during a brawl over a parking space at Dragonmart shopping complex, a court heard yesterday.
The Emirati man, who owns two shops in the mall, told prosecutors he arrived on a Friday evening in May last year to visit his stores and drove around the car park looking for a space.
He said he then stopped his car to wait for a space to open.
"After waiting for 15 minutes, I saw a person coming towards his car and I ask him if he would be leaving soon," FS told prosecutors. "The man told me he would vacate the parking spot after another 15 minutes.
"When the man was leaving his parking area, two other men pulled their car up in front of mine, trying to get in."
The shop owner said he then flashed his high beams and pressed his horn to alert the two - ME, a 24-year-old student, and his father EA, 48 - that he was waiting for that parking space.
"They reversed their car next to mine and rolled down their windows and I told them that this is my space," FS said.
According to prosecution records, the father replied by saying they had been waiting for the space for longer and called him a liar.
FS said he got out of his car to face the men and the student got out and pushed him on the shoulder. The father then got out of the car and held the Emirati man, immobilising him, while his son punched his face repeatedly, prosecutors say.
Bystanders intervened, stopped the fight and called the police. ME and EA then fled the scene.
FS suffered bruises, a black eye and the loss of teeth from his lower jaw, according to prosecutors. ME and EA were charged with aggravated assault leading to a two per cent permanent injury to the Emirati.
The father and son pleaded their innocence at the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance yesterday, after the Judge Hamad Abdel Latif read the charges.
The case was adjourned to December 13 for the father and son to prepare their defence.

Should late investors consider cryptocurrencies?
Wealth managers recommend late investors to have a balanced portfolio that typically includes traditional assets such as cash, government and corporate bonds, equities, commodities and commercial property.
They do not usually recommend investing in Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies due to the risk and volatility associated with them.
“It has produced eye-watering returns for some, whereas others have lost substantially as this has all depended purely on timing and when the buy-in was. If someone still has about 20 to 25 years until retirement, there isn’t any need to take such risks,” Rupert Connor of Abacus Financial Consultant says.
He adds that if a person is interested in owning a business or growing a property portfolio to increase their retirement income, this can be encouraged provided they keep in mind the overall risk profile of these assets.

The drill
Recharge as needed, says Mat Dryden: “We try to make it a rule that every two to three months, even if it’s for four days, we get away, get some time together, recharge, refresh.” The couple take an hour a day to check into their businesses and that’s it.
Stick to the schedule, says Mike Addo: “We have an entire wall known as ‘The Lab,’ covered with colour-coded Post-it notes dedicated to our joint weekly planner, content board, marketing strategy, trends, ideas and upcoming meetings.”
Be a team, suggests Addo: “When training together, you have to trust in each other’s abilities. Otherwise working out together very quickly becomes one person training the other.”
Pull your weight, says Thuymi Do: “To do what we do, there definitely can be no lazy member of the team.”

This rip-off of Leiber/Stoller’s early rock stomper brought a lawsuit against Phillips and necessitated Presley’s premature sale to RCA.
