DUBAI // A man accused of molesting a young girl left in a car with her siblings had his acquittal upheld by the Appeals Court today.
The mother of the girl, a 12-year-old Emirati, left her six children - three boys and three girls - in her parked car while she shopped at the Festival Centre in Dubai Festival City in August. However, the mother left the vehicle's windows open so that the children would not overheat.
The girl told prosecutors that the Indian man NM approached the car after her mother had left and began asking the children what their names were.
"He then stretched his hand through the window and touched my chest," said the girl. She said she slapped his hand and he ran away.
She told her mother what had happened and police were informed. They arrested NM and the girl identified him as the man who had molested her.
He denied a charge of sexual assault when he appeared at the Criminal Court and was acquitted, but the public prosecution appealed the verdict.
