ABU DHABI // A legal consultant has been accused of soliciting a bribe of Dh40 million from an opposing law company in exchange for documents that would help it to win a case against his client.

The other firm pretended to agree to the deal but informed police, who arrested the Egyptian consultant MZ as he delivered the documents, the Abu Dhabi Criminal Court heard yesterday.

Prosecutors have asked that the consultant be kept in custody for seven days to continue their investigations.

The lawsuit brought by his client is claiming Dh486m from a finance-coordinating company.

That case is in an appeals court, where the company's defence lawyer asked yesterday for a long adjournment pending the outcome of the charges against the legal consultant.

The appeals court adjourned the case until August 12.
