ABU DHABI // A community market has set up shop in New Shahama as part of a scheme to support limited-income families by offering them a venue to sell local produce.
Abdulla Al Junaibi, acting executive director of the Municipal Services Sector at Abu Dhabi City Municipality, said the souq would be open until tomorrow with 25 women selling goods from food to toys. The souq also included workshops for children in addition to fun fairs and performances.
“The municipality previously held community souqs at Shamkha from February 18 to March 28 and such events got an encouraging reception from residents of the area,” Mr Al Junaibi said.
From July until the end of the year, a community souq will tour Bahya, Khalifa City and Shakhbout City. “The plan is to hold the souq five times every year in Abu Dhabi in a bid to support family members and ladies who have limited income sources,” said Mr Al Junaibi.
The project is being run with the support of Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority, community police, Civil Defence, and the tourist police.
“These souqs offer families with limited incomes an opportunity to improve their earnings and develop diverse income sources through practicing retail activities, particularly in traditional and local handicrafts,” said Mr Al Junaibi.
