DUBAI // An 18-year-old Canadian student accused of smoking hashish claims he did not do so in the UAE but with a friend in Sudan.
Tests carried out in a forensics lab confirmed that MH’s urine contained traces of the illegal drug.
However, at Dubai Criminal Court on Wednesday the student told the presiding judge: “I didn’t smoke hashish while I was here in Dubai, I smoked while I was on a visit in Sudan on the 19th of November last year.”
In the UAE, someone with drugs in their blood stream or urine can face up to four years in jail.
Anti-narcotics police agent OB, 38, said in his statement: “We were informed that the defendant was in possession of hashish, and on the 6th of December last year, we tracked him down in Dubai Marina at around 7.40pm.”
“When we asked him if he consumed hashish, he said: ‘Yes, I did smoke hashish last week with a friend of mine, we were celebrating his birthday.’”
The next hearing will be held on March 3.
