Deaf and hearing-impaired smartphone users have asked Etisalat to reduce the price of mobile data, as the software they rely on to communicate uses significant bandwidth, and has a high cost.

According to Al Ittihad, the Arabic-language sister newspaper of The National, many hearing-impaired people frequently use video calling to allow them to use sign language – but frequent use can incur hefty fees. Some users reported having to pay between Dh2,000 and Dh5,000 a month.
