DUBAI // A businessman rented out two plots of land after forging the signature of the dead owner, Dubai Criminal Court heard yesterday.
The defendant, a 36-year-old Indian, denied charges of forgery and use of forged documents.
Prosecutors said the alleged offence was discovered in April 2015 when the owner’s wife saw a copy of the lease contract by coincidence.
“My husband died in 2006 leaving two land plots in Al Gharhoud area and by chance I saw a lease contract signed by my dead husband in 2014 in favour of the defendant, “ said the widow.
She said the defendant had been drawing profit from the land since 2014.
She reported the matter to police.
Police inquiries with the Dubai Land Department found that the contract was issued on September 23, 2014.
The defendant allegedly confessed during questioning that he had been renting the plots of land for profit.
The next hearing will be on May 15.
