DUBAI // A butchered 1977 Silver Shadow Rolls-Royce is drawing a lot of attention at the Big Boys Toys 2013 exhibition at Atlantis, The Palm.
The exhibition, part of the Dubai Shopping Festival, began yesterday, and the Silver Shadow was already drawing curious crowds.
The once classic lines have been altered to make room for speakers, and what was once the domain of a white-gloved chauffeur has become a DJ booth.
“It was in a bad state when we got it,” said Stef van der Bijl, its designer. “We tried everything to keep the Rolls-Royce feel to it.”
Once Mr van der Bijl had completed his two-year labour of love, it was rented out for high-end private parties in Dubai and Monaco.
Now the Rolls with rhythm is up for sale. “We have an offer in at the moment, but we are hoping for Dh600,000,” he said.
The refitted engine has only 1,667 kilometres on the clock and the interiors are fitted with the original burr walnut and mahogany trim. “It’s the type of car you either love or hate,” said Mr van der Bijl.
A range of supercars are on display too and, for the first time, visitors can get behind the wheel and take the cars for a cruise on The Palm Jumeirah’s Crescent Road.
“There is so much here I’d love to have but I don’t think my wife would be happy if blew a few hundred thousand dirhams on a motorbike,” said Ahmed Mohammad, a 38-year-old IT consultant from Jordan who was waiting to test drive a car. “It’ll be a test drive only.”
A more economically-friendly ride on display is the Zeecoo, a motorbike that looks like its come straight off the Bladerunner film set.
The electric powered bike can reach 100 kph in less than three seconds.
“It looks amazing and a lot of fun to ride – the design is amazing,” said Roger Smith, a 28-year-old British tourist.
“There’s a lot of really cool things here but I think the Bang and Olufsen TV would exceed my baggage allowance.”
The 103-inch TV set is going for a mere Dh460,000. But add Dh100,000 to the total if you want its customised wall mount.
And if you’re willing to spend that much on a television you might also be tempted by a Dh129,000 crossbow. The 24 karat gold bow comes complete with golden arrows and has never been fired because Hubert Wursthorn wants the buyer to be the first to use it.
“It has hand painted tips of falcons and horses along with the UAE flag’s colours,” he added.
