SHARJAH // A baby girl is safe after being found in a basket in the car park of a supermarket on Sunday.

A member of the public called police at about 12.30pm after hearing the nine-month-old crying but she was found to be in good health after being left for dead in the Al Majaz area of the emirate.

The baby was taken to Al Qassimi Hospital for tests but, after she was found to be well, she was handed over to Sharjah social care centre.

Forensic teams surveyed the scene for fingerprints and police are investigating to find out who left the baby abandoned in the car park and to establish their motives, reported The National's sister paper, Al Ittihad.

In March, an Ethiopian maid placed her six-week-old baby boy conceived out of wedlock into a box weighed down with bricks and threw him into the sea, before his body washed up on Al Hira corniche.
