A much-anticipated cultural programme in Al Ain has been postponed because of bad weather.

The event on Friday and Saturday at Al Ain Oasis was scheduled to kick off a year-long series of festivities, the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority said on Thursday.

The Oasis Afternoons activities at the UAE’s only Unesco World Heritage site was to have included a market with traditional, handmade and modern Emirati products.

Weather warnings were issued on Wednesday evening about poor visibility caused by blowing sand and dust in some parts of the country, as well as a chance of rain and, in the mountains, possibly snow.

On Thursday, the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology reported rain over Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Umm Al Quwain and Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah.

Wind speeds of 40 to 50 kph were reported in Al Hamra, Sweihan and Qasyoura, with visibility in those areas as low as 900 metres because of blowing dust and sand.
