ABU DHABI // A Chinese supermarket on Sheikh Zayed Street has been closed down over food safety violations.

Its offences included a general lack of hygiene, an absence of food control certificates, non-participation in food safety training and stocking food of "unknown origin".

Expired biscuits, tea, dried fish and sweets from the shop were destroyed following the closure.

The Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority ordered the closure after the owner failed to take "ample opportunities to take preventative measures".

The store also failed to display Arabic labels on food items.
