DUBAI // This year’s Abu Dhabi Science Festival will go on tour with shows in Al Ain, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain.
In the capital, the event will take place from November 14 to 23 at the du Forum on Yas Island as well as the popular Corniche East Plaza.
“We are thrilled to engage with all our future scientists and engineers that live across the UAE by bringing this science extravaganza to them,” said Neama Al Marshoudi, manager of content, Science and Technology Development for the Abu Dhabi Technology Development Committee (TDC).
“Our touring activities will inspire and captivate our young visitors as they will have the chance to build and then race model cars, construct Kaleidoscopes, program robots and experience many other exciting activities.”
The festival travels to Al Ain Zoo on November 14, 15 and again on November 22 and 23. On November 16, children from Al Gharbia can join in the fun at the Madinat Zayed Garden.
On November 17 and 18, the event will move to the Ras Al Khaimah Corniche, while on November 19 and 20 visitors to the Fujairah Corniche will be able to take part.
On November 21 children from Umm Al Quwain will get a chance to enjoy the hands-on scientific games and challenges at the emirate’s Cultural Centre.
Each event will feature a variety of workshops and shows, such as how to make water powered “rocket” cars and building solar-powered lamps.

TERMINAL HIGH ALTITUDE AREA DEFENCE (THAAD)
What is THAAD?
It is considered to be the US's most superior missile defence system.
Production:
It was created in 2008.
Speed:
THAAD missiles can travel at over Mach 8, so fast that it is hypersonic.
Abilities:
THAAD is designed to take out ballistic missiles as they are on their downward trajectory towards their target, otherwise known as the "terminal phase".
Purpose:
To protect high-value strategic sites, such as airfields or population centres.
Range:
THAAD can target projectiles inside and outside the Earth's atmosphere, at an altitude of 150 kilometres above the Earth's surface.
Creators:
Lockheed Martin was originally granted the contract to develop the system in 1992. Defence company Raytheon sub-contracts to develop other major parts of the system, such as ground-based radar.
UAE and THAAD:
In 2011, the UAE became the first country outside of the US to buy two THAAD missile defence systems. It then stationed them in 2016, becoming the first Gulf country to do so.
