Abu Dhabi issues more than 11,000 speeding fines in three months

More than 11,000 fines have been issued for speeding motorists in Abu Dhabi in the first quarter of the year.

Brig Khalifa Al Khaili, director of the Traffic and Patrols Department at Abu Dhabi police, said 11,434 vehicles were caught exceeding the speed limit at intersections in the capital over the past three months, while 2,375 were fined for running red lights.

“Traffic control systems were placed at intersections and traffic lights to catch violators who speed to catch the end of a green light or cross a red light, which can result in fatal accidents to both motorists and pedestrians,” said Brig Al Khaili.

According to the amended traffic law, speeding motorists can be fined between Dh300 and Dh2,000 depending on the severity of the offence, while the fine for running a red light is Dh1,000 with 12 black points and impoundment of the vehicle for 30 days.

Brig Al Khaili urged motorists to adhere to the speed limits, traffic rules and avoid increasing their speed to catch a the last second of a green light.
