Emirati businessman Abdullah Al Ghurair is being commended for pledging to give away a third of his assets to charity.
The Islamic Organisation for Education, Science and Culture (ISESCO) has applauded Mr Al Ghurair’s commitment, which includes donating over US$1 billion for education initiatives among Arab youth.
Successful businessmen, women, and the wealthy, in Muslim countries should follow his example, said Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri, director general of ISESCO.
The donation aims to provide US$1.14 billion, or Dh4.2 billion over 10 years, for educating underprivileged Emirati and Arab youth.
The announcement was made last week by Mr Al Ghurair’s son, Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair during a press conference in Dubai.
The launch of the Abdullah Al Ghurair Education Foundation coincided with Zayed Humanitarian Work Day, held on the 19th day of Ramadan each year to honour the philanthropic legacy of the founding father Sheikh Zayed.
The new foundation will invest in programmes that improve the quality of education at the primary and secondary levels, while also helping a minimum of 15,000 youth pursue quality higher education.
