DUBAI // A seven-month-old baby girl was killed in a traffic accident yesterday on the Palm Jumeirah.
She died while being carried by her mother in the front seat of a car driven by the child's father, according to the chief Dubai traffic prosecutor, Salah Bu Faroosha.
The accident occurred at 8am on the Sheikh Zayed Road exit from the Palm Jumeirah.
Preliminary investigations show the 31-year-old father crashed into a cement road barrier "due to excessive speed and lack of attention", Mr Bu Faroosha said.
"In her testimony, the mother said that she was propelled on to the windshield of the car while she was sitting in the front seat cradling the infant," he added.
A vehicle inspection showed there was no child seat in the car. UAE traffic laws do not allow children under 10 in the front passenger seat.
Prosecutors released the father on compassionate grounds.
It was the third child traffic death in Dubai this year, according to prosecution records.
Meanwhile, Hamdan Hareb al Shamsi, a 21-year-old Emirati soldier, was killed in a collision between two vehicles in Al Ain's Ruwais district on Thursday night, police said.
