ABU DHABI // A model of the world's only satellite designed to monitor greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is on show at the exhibition accompanying the World Future Energy Summit.
ABB, a Swiss-based power and automation technology company, one of more than 600 exhibitors at the show at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, has a model on its stand of GOSAT, which launched the Japanese space agency JAXA a year ago.
Jim Kelly, ABB's representative for business development and marketing in the Middle East, said the technology could be used to ensure that the Kyoto Protocol and other environmental agreements were being observed. The company's Canadian branch had developed the infrared analytic technology that can monitor emissions of both carbon dioxide and methane.
Back down to Earth in the exhibition hall, the German firm Siemens is showing off a specially adapted electric-powered Porsche that may go some way to reassuring respondents to this week's The National/YouGov survey who feared environmentally friendly cars might be too slow.
The "Greenster" has a top speed of 250 kph and can run for approximately 400km when fully charged.
Concerned motorists do not have to wait for technological breakthroughs to mitigate the impact of their driving.
The ExxonMobil stand featured a see-through model of a car kitted out with energy-saving products the company already manufactures, including lighter plastics in the interior for improved fuel efficiency, and a special plastic lining in tyres that can help them maintain the correct pressure, for further fuel savings.
