Five hundred Syrian pupils are on waiting lists for places at schools in Sharjah.
Hessa Al Khaja, the head of private education at Sharjah Education Zone, said a large number of pupils from Syria had already been enrolled.
The zone is trying to find places for as many as possible, Ms Al Khaja told Al Ittihad, the Arabic-language sister paper of The National.
The Ministry of Education has called on private schools to accept applications from the children of Syrian citizens without insisting on the usual documents because of the civil war, she said.
Ms Al Khaja called on private schools and parents to submit information on newly-enrolled Syrian pupils to her department in time for the new school year, which starts on Sunday.
Pupils, whose papers are certified by the Syrian foreign and education ministries, would be immediately registered in schools close to their homes.
In the case of those who do not have official proof of completed schooling, their parents’ testimony would be accepted and the pupils would be tested in Arabic, English and maths to determine their level.
