Abu Dhabi Police have released a video highlighting the dangers of sudden lane changes. The footage shows a driver cutting in front of another car, causing it to collide with the back of the vehicle and spin into the central reservation. Police said the driver committed several offences, including performing a sudden lane change and failing to keep a safe distance. The video was posted on the force’s social media accounts as part of an awareness drive aimed at improving the safety of the emirate’s roads. It regularly releases videos of accidents to encourage motorists to be more cautious. Cameras in the emirate are equipped with technology that can detect both vehicles — the one in front and the other that is tailgating. Last year, more than 45,000 penalties were issued to tailgaters, who received a Dh400 fine and four points on their licence. If they cause an accident, they have to pay a fine of Dh5,000 within three months to avoid their car being taken to a public auction yard. Police said reckless drivers tried to intimidate other motorists by driving closely behind them, flashing their headlights and forcing other drivers to change lanes in a hurry, which can cause serious accidents.
