A boy wash their hands under running water from a community pump well ahead of World Water Day in Peshawar, Pakistan, 20 March 2024 (issued 21 March 2024). Pakistan is facing a dire water scarcity crisis, ranking 14th among the world's most at-risk countries. With over 80% of the population experiencing severe water shortages for at least one month each year, the situation is exacerbated by the overdrawn groundwater resources, primarily for irrigation purposes. If the current trajectory continues, the entire country may confront water scarcity by 2025, a report by Pakistan Institute of Development Economics said. Pakistan relies heavily on water inflows from India, with only two-thirds of available water being utilized while a significant portion is lost or wasted. EPA / ARSHAD ARBAB
