DUBAI // Godolphin trainer Saeed bin Suroor has made a habit of winning the Group 1 Al Maktoum Challenge III and did so for a 10th time on Saturday with Prince Bishop and Kieren Fallon providing his latest victory in the 2,000 metres Tapeta feature.
Dubai Millennium (2000), Street Cry (2002) and Electrocutionist (2006) all won this contest before going on to victory in the world’s richest horse race, the US$10million (Dh37m) Dubai World Cup, and that will surely be the next stop for Prince Bishop in three weeks’ time.
A month ago, Fallon had won the Group 2 Al Maktoum Challenge II on the same horse and the pair have clearly built up a good rapport.
They sat in midfield, with Mutajare setting a good gallop before the leader weakened quickly 300m out.
That left Surfer in front and briefly he looked to have his rivals in trouble, but Fallon’s mount was making relentless progress, leading about 100m out and going away from Surfer.
Sanshaawes ran on well to snatch second, leaving Surfer to finish third in the race for the second year running.
“Prince Bishop has always worked like a really good horse and has really started to show his true ability this season and Kieren Fallon gets on really well with him,” Bin Suroor said.
“We have enjoyed a lot of success in this race in the past and it has been a good evening. The World Cup is the obvious route to follow. He seems to be improving and his win four weeks ago clearly did his confidence a lot of good.”
Fallon said: “He is talented and tough, which is never a bad combination. The World Cup will be a stronger race but he has earned his right to be there.”
The win gave Fallon and the trainer a double, but Bin Suroor turned that into a training treble by the end of the meeting.

Why it pays to compare
A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.
Route 1: bank transfer
The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.
Total cost: Dh567.25 - around 2.9 per cent of the total amount
Total received: €4,670.30
Route 2: online platform
The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.
Total cost: Dh74.10, around 0.4 per cent of the transaction
Total received: €4,756
The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.

Tightening the screw on rogue recruiters
The UAE overhauled the procedure to recruit housemaids and domestic workers with a law in 2017 to protect low-income labour from being exploited.
Only recruitment companies authorised by the government are permitted as part of Tadbeer, a network of labour ministry-regulated centres.
A contract must be drawn up for domestic workers, the wages and job offer clearly stating the nature of work.
The contract stating the wages, work entailed and accommodation must be sent to the employee in their home country before they depart for the UAE.
The contract will be signed by the employer and employee when the domestic worker arrives in the UAE.
Only recruitment agencies registered with the ministry can undertake recruitment and employment applications for domestic workers.
Penalties for illegal recruitment in the UAE include fines of up to Dh100,000 and imprisonment
But agents not authorised by the government sidestep the law by illegally getting women into the country on visit visas.
