What’s at stake in NFL Week 17: Packers and Lions fight for NFC North, Matt Ryan and Tom Brady vie for MVP

Even with all but one of the 12 play-off berths wrapped up, there is plenty to play for in the final week. The NFC North will decide their division on the field, the top seed in the AFC is the Patriots’ to lose and MVP candidates have one more game to shine.

All on the line in the NFC North

If the Washington Redskins beat the New York Giants (Monday, 1.30am) they are very likely in as a Wild Card winner, and the season-finale duel between the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions in Detroit (5.30am) will be a win-or-go-home match (assuming no draws ... it gets confusing if any games end in draws). The Green Bay-Detroit winner will be NFC North champions regardless, but the loser could still get the No 6 seed should Washington falter. The Giants are locked in to the 5 seed as a Wild Card, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are still mathematically alive for the 6, though their chances are extremely slim.

Who gets a bye week?

The Dallas Cowboys have nothing to play for, having already secured the top NFC seed. The 2 seed (and subsequent bye week) belongs to the Atlanta Falcons if they beat the New Orleans Saints (1.25am), but if the Falcons lose the Seattle Seahawks can claim the coveted slot if they beat the hapless San Francisco 49ers (1.25am). In the AFC, the New England Patriots have a bye wrapped up, and either the Kansas City Chiefs or Oakland Raiders will have the other one.

Shuffling the AFC

The Raiders suffered a devastating loss last week in the form of injured quarterback Derek Carr, who is likely out for the year. But Oakland can still get the top seed in the AFC with a win at the Denver Broncos (1.25am) plus a Patriots loss at Miami (10pm). An Oakland loss plus a Kansas City win over the San Diego Chargers (1.25am) gives the Chiefs the West and the 2 seed, leaving Oakland one of the two Wild Card spots. Both the Raiders and Chiefs are in the tournament regardless of seeding, as are the surprising Miami Dolphins as the final Wild Card. The Pittsburgh Steelers are locked in to the 3 seed, and the Houston Texans are as the 4.

Individual honours

The MVP winner has been atypically tough to forecast this season, as Atlanta's Matt Ryan, New England's Tom Brady and Dallas rookie Ezekiel Elliott are among a group of many players to have made compelling cases for the league's top individual prize. Elliott – the likely Rookie of the Year – might not see too much playing time this week as the Cowboys would be wise to rest their starters, but the Falcons and Patriots quarterbacks will each be looking for important wins, allowing them to better their MVP cases. Though Brady is probably the favourite to win the MVP for a third time despite missing the first four games due to suspension, Ryan might have a better case, as he is on pace for the fourth-highest QB rating in league history (115.5) at the helm of an historically potent Falcons offence. Aaron Rodgers will get his share of votes, and Arizona's David Johnson is having an incredibly productive year as well, though his team's lack of success will likely count against him in the voting.

How The Debt Panel's advice helped readers in 2019

December 11: 'My husband died, so what happens to the Dh240,000 he owes in the UAE?'

JL, a housewife from India, wrote to us about her husband, who died earlier this month. He left behind an outstanding loan of Dh240,000 and she was hoping to pay it off with an insurance policy he had taken out. She also wanted to recover some of her husband’s end-of-service liabilities to help support her and her son.

“I have no words to thank you for helping me out,” she wrote to The Debt Panel after receiving the panellists' comments. “The advice has given me an idea of the present status of the loan and how to take it up further. I will draft a letter and send it to the email ID on the bank’s website along with the death certificate. I hope and pray to find a way out of this.”

November 26:  ‘I owe Dh100,000 because my employer has not paid me for a year’

SL, a financial services employee from India, left the UAE in June after quitting his job because his employer had not paid him since November 2018. He owes Dh103,800 on four debts and was told by the panellists he may be able to use the insolvency law to solve his issue.

SL thanked the panellists for their efforts. "Indeed, I have some clarity on the consequence of the case and the next steps to take regarding my situation," he says. "Hopefully, I will be able to provide a positive testimony soon."

October 15: 'I lost my job and left the UAE owing Dh71,000. Can I return?'

MS, an energy sector employee from South Africa, left the UAE in August after losing his Dh12,000 job. He was struggling to meet the repayments while securing a new position in the UAE and feared he would be detained if he returned. He has now secured a new job and will return to the Emirates this month.

“The insolvency law is indeed a relief to hear,” he says. "I will not apply for insolvency at this stage. I have been able to pay something towards my loan and credit card. As it stands, I only have a one-month deficit, which I will be able to recover by the end of December."

The UN General Assembly President in quotes:

YEMEN: “The developments we have seen are promising. We really hope that the parties are going to respect the agreed ceasefire. I think that the sense of really having the political will to have a peace process is vital. There is a little bit of hope and the role that the UN has played is very important.”

PALESTINE: “There is no easy fix. We need to find the political will and comply with the resolutions that we have agreed upon.”

OMAN: “It is a very important country in our system. They have a very important role to play in terms of the balance and peace process of that particular part of the world, in that their position is neutral. That is why it is very important to have a dialogue with the Omani authorities.”

REFORM OF THE SECURITY COUNCIL: “This is complicated and it requires time. It is dependent on the effort that members want to put into the process. It is a process that has been going on for 25 years. That process is slow but the issue is huge. I really hope we will see some progress during my tenure.”

Gender equality in the workplace still 200 years away

It will take centuries to achieve gender parity in workplaces around the globe, according to a December report from the World Economic Forum.

The WEF study said there had been some improvements in wage equality in 2018 compared to 2017, when the global gender gap widened for the first time in a decade.

But it warned that these were offset by declining representation of women in politics, coupled with greater inequality in their access to health and education.

At current rates, the global gender gap across a range of areas will not close for another 108 years, while it is expected to take 202 years to close the workplace gap, WEF found.

The Geneva-based organisation's annual report tracked disparities between the sexes in 149 countries across four areas: education, health, economic opportunity and political empowerment.

After years of advances in education, health and political representation, women registered setbacks in all three areas this year, WEF said.

Only in the area of economic opportunity did the gender gap narrow somewhat, although there is not much to celebrate, with the global wage gap narrowing to nearly 51 per cent.

And the number of women in leadership roles has risen to 34 per cent globally, WEF said.

At the same time, the report showed there are now proportionately fewer women than men participating in the workforce, suggesting that automation is having a disproportionate impact on jobs traditionally performed by women.

And women are significantly under-represented in growing areas of employment that require science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills, WEF said.
