The inaugural Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi Fujairah Ramadan Cup on Friday kick-starts the UAE’s new jiu-jitsu season.
The competition at the Fujairah Towers has drawn more than 200 entries with a prize fund of Dh70,000 up for grabs.
It will be followed by a three-day Ramadan competition in Al Ain exclusively for Emiratis — girls, boys and adults — from June 4 to 6, and the annual No-Gi (without the traditional kimono) at the Armed Forces Officers Club in Abu Dhabi on June 9 and 10.
It also means jiu-jitsu competitions will be staged in the country with only a five-week break after the season-concluding Abu Dhabi World Professional Championships in April.
“The competitions are staged out of necessity,” said Fahad Ali Al Shamsi, chief executive officer of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation.
“In terms of numbers, the growth has been overwhelming. We need to provide them more opportunities to compete. The Fujairah Open adds as another exciting venue by taking the sport to a new audience.”
