Transfer talk: Bolton complete signing of Nigel Reo-Coker

Bolton have completed the signing of midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker. The 27 year old has been a free agent since his contract with Premier League rivals Aston Villa expired earlier this summer.

Reo-Coker has agreed a two-year contract with Owen Coyle's side.

Reo-Coker told Bolton's official website: "I spoke with the gaffer and he outlined his plans and how he wants the club to progress. I want to be part of that and I'm looking forward to meeting up with the lads and getting to work."

Arsene Wenger has revealed Theo Walcott has left the club's training camp in Germany to undergo a scan on a recurring ankle problem.

The England international forward, 22, sat out training on Monday before the decision was made to send him home and try to fix the problem before Arsenal start their Premier League campaign against Newcastle United next month.

Wenger, the manager, told the club's website: "Theo went home early and was due to have an MRI [scan]. It is an ankle injury that comes and goes. We need some more investigation because sometimes he's completely free of it and sometimes it affects him." Conor Henderson, the young Irish midfielder, is set to miss at least six months of the season after suffering a knee injury in Saturday's 2-1 win over Cologne.

Dave Whelan, the Wigan chairman, said the club are determined to hang on to Hugo Rodallega and the striker will be offered a new contract.

The Colombia international is entering the final year of his current deal and that has put a number of clubs on alert. "We'll be talking to Hugo when he gets back from the Copa America," Whelan told the Wigan Evening Post. "As far as I know he's happy here. We'd like him to stay. We've not had an offer in for Hugo ... We do not want to be selling him though - absolutely not."

Jay Spearing is ready to fight for his place this season. The 22 year old signed a new long-term contract towards the end of the previous campaign after impressing Kenny Dalglish, the manager. With Steven Gerrard returning to fitness, and the arrivals of Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam, midfield is an area where Dalglish has a surfeit of talent. "I know I need to step up again and prove I can play alongside them or in front of them," Spearing told the Liverpool Echo.

Alex McLeish said it is unlikely he will add any new faces before the start of the season after seeing his Aston Villa side beat Blackburn Rovers 1-0 to reach the final of the Barclays Asia Trophy in Hong Kong yesterday, Darren Bent scored the winner.

With a deal for Wigan's Charles N'Zogbia almost done, for a fee of around £9.5 million (Dh57.1m), McLeish conceded the Frenchman's arrival will probably be the last before the end of the summer window.

"You can never say never, but at the moment if we get N'Zogbia, which is looking good, then it's unlikely we will do anything unless there's more trading with the players we already have in the squad," he said.

Leon Barnett acknowledged Norwich are setting their sights no higher than a 17th-place finish when the Premier League season concludes in May. "I'd take fourth from bottom. I want to stay in the Premier League and play there next year and the year after," the defender said.

Gender pay parity on track in the UAE

The UAE has a good record on gender pay parity, according to Mercer's Total Remuneration Study.

"In some of the lower levels of jobs women tend to be paid more than men, primarily because men are employed in blue collar jobs and women tend to be employed in white collar jobs which pay better," said Ted Raffoul, career products leader, Mena at Mercer. "I am yet to see a company in the UAE – particularly when you are looking at a blue chip multinationals or some of the bigger local companies – that actively discriminates when it comes to gender on pay."

Mr Raffoul said most gender issues are actually due to the cultural class, as the population is dominated by Asian and Arab cultures where men are generally expected to work and earn whereas women are meant to start a family.

"For that reason, we see a different gender gap. There are less women in senior roles because women tend to focus less on this but that’s not due to any companies having a policy penalising women for any reasons – it’s a cultural thing," he said.

As a result, Mr Raffoul said many companies in the UAE are coming up with benefit package programmes to help working mothers and the career development of women in general.
