As the world's richest horse racing event approaches we look at the top women jockeys who have adorned the saddle like their counterpart, Chantal Sutherland, will at Meydan Racecourse.
Julie Krone
In 1993 she became the first female jockey to capture one of America's Triple Crown races when she rode Colonial Affair to win the Belmont Stakes. In 2003 she then became the first woman to win at the Breeders' Cup, which led to her becoming the first woman to be inducted in to the Hall of Fame.
Hayley Turner
Europe's top woman jockey won her first Group 1 race last summer when partnering Dream Ahead in the July Cup at Newmarket. She followed up that success at the highest level when guiding Margot Did to victory in the Nunthorpe Stakes. Turner will ride Margot Did in the Al Quoz Sprint on World Cup night.
Bev Buckingham
After emigrating from England in 1967 to Australia, she became the first female jockey in the southern hemisphere to win 1,000 races. In 1984 she became the first woman to ride in the Caulfield Cup, Australia's prestigious 2,400m handicap. She broke her neck in a fall in Hobart in 1998 after which she was wheelchair-bound, but regained her mobility to walk again unaided.
Clare Lindop
In 2003 Lindop became the first Australian female to ride in the Melbourne Cup. Lindop has now ridden in the race three times and won the Victoria Derby in 2008. Lindop, who is stable jockey to Leon Macdonoald and Andrew Gluyas, has ridden four Group 1 winners and hit the 1,000-winner mark last year.
Rosemary Homeister
She was the first woman to win an Eclipse award for outstanding apprentice jockey in America in 1992 and was the top female rider in America 2000-02. She became the fifth woman to ride in the Kentucky Derby in 2003 and her career haul of 2,438 rides is second only to Krone's 3,704. Homeister gave birth to a daughter in August but has not ruled out a comeback.
