Monfils sends Cilic out

Recently-crowned Rotterdam champion Gael Monfils continued his run of form as he beat Marin Cilic in three sets.

Monfils, who beat Stan Wawrinka for the Rotterdam title earlier this week, took three sets to send world No 10 Cilic packing. The world No 23 won 6-3, 4-6, 6-0.

In comparison to Frenchman Monfils, Cilic was undercooked having not played a professional match since his last-16 exit at the Australian Open against Roberto Bautista Agut.

Monfils next meets Marcos Baghdatis.

Berdych recovers to win

Tomas Berdych continued his superb comeback in 2019 by beating a man nine years his junior in Dubai.

Berdych, a 33-year-old former world No 4 who is now 88th in the ATP rankings, defeated Ilya Ivashka of Belarussia 4-6, 6-4, 7-6. The Czech star, who is making his way back from injury, has had a strong year so far arriving in the emirate with 11 wins and just four losses under his belt.

He will next face the winner of the Borna Coric-Jiri Vesely match.

Comfortable progress for Nishikori

It was Kei Nishikori's first game in Dubai on Tuesday and he made comfortable work of defeating Benoit Paire to reach the last 16.

The world No 6 triumphed 6-4, 6-3  to book a match-up with Hubert Hurkacz on Wednesday for a quarter-final place.

The No 1 seed survived a break point on his own serve in his opening game, and moved on from that to break Paire in the next game.

Paire was getting a good look at Nishikori's serve early on but he failed to take any of the seven break points created in the fourth game as the Japanese player held.

That would be the last break point Nishikori would face as he served out the first set, and then breaks in the fifth and the ninth games of the second set sealed his victory.

World No 113 Berankis defeats Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev became the latest seed to crash out of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships after he lost to Ricardas Berankis on Tuesday afternoon.

The Russian No 8 seed was well beaten 6-3, 6-3 by the Lithuanian world No 113 in the first match on Centre Court.

Medvedev, the world No 15, had started badly as he was broken in the opening game and he never recovered as he was broken again in the ninth game to lose the set.

Things got worse in the second set as he lost four games on the spin to go 5-1 down, and although he got one of the breaks back it was delaying the inevitable as Berankis clinched victory on his third match point.

Berankis, who had come through qualifying to make the main draw, will face Denis Kudla next after the unseeded American came from a set down to defeat Matteo Berrettini 2-6, 7-5, 7-5.

Medvedev joins Karen Khachanov (No 4) and Milos Raonic (No 7) in being seeds eliminated in the first round of the ATP 500 event.

Baghdatis survives scare against Safwat of Egyptian

2016 Dubai runner-up Marcos Baghdatis survived a tough duel against Mohamed Safwat to make it to the second round with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 success.

The Cypriot, once as high as world No 8, now at No 128, had looked in trouble against the world No 218 as he dropped the first set to a single break in the fifth game.

But Baghdatis, the 2006 Australian Open runner-up, dominated the second set as he broke twice, and a break to love in the ninth game of the final set clinched a match-up with either No 3 seed Marin Cilic or Gael Monfils on Wednesday.
