BARCELONA // Albert Costa has been named as the new captain of Davis Cup champions Spain.
Costa, 33, replaces Emilio Sanchez Vicario, who stepping down from his position after leading Spain to their third Davis Cup title last month with a 3-1 victory over Argentina.
Costa is a former French Open champion who climbed as high as sixth in the world as a player before retiring in 2006, while he was a member of Spain's successful Davis Cup side in 2000. Costa is also the coach of Davis Cup player Feliciano Lopez and was the favourite to replace Sanchez Vicario.
"It's a dream come true. I'm excited by the project I have been entrusted with and am grateful for the confidence place in me," said Costa.
"I hope to keep the standards high, although that is not going to be an easy job because Emilio has left a legacy that will be difficult to better.
