DUBAI // A dogged Dubai derby played out at Al Maktoum Stadium on Thursday night, but in truth it did little for either side.
Al Nasr and Al Shabab represent outside contenders for this season’s Arabian Gulf League title, or so the theory goes, and therefore the two reacquainted their rivalry with plenty to play for: Nasr, sitting second, had the opportunity to leapfrog Al Ain at the top, while Shabab could move within three points of the summit.
A 1-1 draw, then, failed to sate either appetite. In fact, Nasr would depart the more aggrieved, given they were keenly contesting the clash until Jires Kembo Ekoko was sent off just after the hour for what appeared to be dissent.
Earlier, he had crossed for Luis Jimenez to score, providing the summer signing his fifth league goal this term. Much like his new club, Jimenez is enjoying a strong start to the season.
The same can be said for Jo, Shabab’s star signing. The Brazilian’s equaliser 16 minutes later, when he pounced on a loose ball to slot home, took his tally to eight goals in all competitions.
Ultimately, the spoils were shared, and Tariq Ahmed received a straight red in injury time for an apparent elbow on Essa Mohammed. A feisty finish to a match that left both sides wanting more.
Man of the match
Esam Dhahi The Nasr defender stood strong against his former club, especially when the hosts were reduced to 10 men. He cajoled his teammates during the frantic spell that followed.
What managers said
Ivan Jovanovic, the Nasr coach: "First of all, I have to know why my two players were sent off. As a coach of Al Nasr this is my fifth game in the league against Al Shabab and in four of these games we have red cards against us. At this time ... I can't comment on the game."
Caio Junior, the Shabab coach: "Psychologically, it's very difficult to play after one loss against Al Ain, but we played very well today, same as we did throughout last season. Of course I want to win, but I'm very happy. One point here is important."
The National’s verdict
A point apiece was justifiable, however Nasr have two suspensions to contend with, not to mention Nilmar’s continued struggles. The striker was substituted after the first red card, meaning he is yet to score in the league. Shabab, meanwhile, responded well to defeat last time out.
