Three-time UIM F1 H20 world champion Alex Carella has joined Team Abu Dhabi, the watersport marque announced on Wednesday.
The Italian will join the team for the Grand Prix of Qatar, the first race on the 2015 calendar, being held this weekend in Doha.
Carella won three successive titles from 2011-13 in the powerboat racing sport for Qatar Team. He joins Emirati teammate Thani Al Qamzi on Team Abu Dhabi and will be mentored by his compatriot, the 10-time world champion Guido Capellini, the team announced.
“I am thrilled to be joining Team Abu Dhabi. I have often thought about this team in the past and they know exactly the meaning of professionalism and competing at the highest level,” said Carella in a press release.
Team Abu Dhabi general manager Salem Rumaithi called Carella, “one of the finest racers in the world and probably the best of his generation,” in the release.
Said new teammate Al Qamzi: “I have enjoyed competing against him for several years when he was an integral member of the Qatar Team and it is great that we are now teammates and will be working together for Team Abu Dhabi.”
Qatar Team won the 2014 team title, racing well ahead of second-placed CTIC China Team with 118 points. The Chinese marque were 40 back in second with 78. Team Abu Dhabi finished sixth with 28.
Carella won the opening two races last season, in Qatar and China, before a disqualification in the third race, also in Doha, that derailed his attempt at a fourth straight world championship. He finished fifth in Abu Dhabi and second in Sharjah in the final two races of the season, losing out on the world title to France’s Philippe Chiappe of the CTIC China Team by eight points.
Carella replaces the other Emirati in Team Abu Dhabi’s stable from last season, Ahmed Al Hameli. Al Qamzi and Al Hameli finished ninth and tenth in the driver standings, each with 14 points.
The F1 H20 World Championship has expanded its calendar by three races – with the second Doha race scrapped and a second Chinese race, in Zhuhai, added with races in Evian-les-Bains, France and Porto, Portugal also in the mix. The Grand Prix of Thailand will see its inaugural staging, as well.

Unresolved crisis
Russia and Ukraine have been locked in a bitter conflict since 2014, when Ukraine’s Kremlin-friendly president was ousted, Moscow annexed Crimea and then backed a separatist insurgency in the east.
Fighting between the Russia-backed rebels and Ukrainian forces has killed more than 14,000 people. In 2015, France and Germany helped broker a peace deal, known as the Minsk agreements, that ended large-scale hostilities but failed to bring a political settlement of the conflict.
