Sandro DeAngelis booted five field goals to lift the Calgary Stampeders to a 22-14 victory over the Montreal Alouettes in the 96th Grey Cup.
The game featured the league's top two quarterbacks in Anthony Calvillo and Henry Burris but the final failed to produce the expected fireworks, with each side managing just one touchdown. It was the kickers who stole the spotlight, DeAngelis booting a 44-yard field in the opening half and connecting on 12, 14, 21 and 50-yard efforts after the break.
Playing in their home stadium in front of the second largest ever crowd for a Grey Cup game, the Alouettes battled to a 13-10 half-time lead, but their high-powered attack spluttered in the second half and scored just one point.
The Stampeders' first win since 2001 was sweet redemption for Burris, who walked away with the championship game MVP award having been beaten out for league MVP honours by Calvillo.
"I feel like I'm living a dream right now, it's been a long tough journey," Burris said. "This is what we fight for.
"We've been dragged through the dirt a few years...but we learned a lot from the journey to get to where we are today."
