United States sprinter Justin Gatlin ran his personal best and set a world-leading time of 9.74 seconds in the 100 metres at the IAAF Diamond League meet in Doha on Friday.
The 33-year-old edged out compatriot Michael Rodgers, who ran the distance in 9.96s, into second place, with Keston Bledman third in a shade over 10 seconds.
Britain’s James Dasaolu came home in eighth place in a time of 10.14s.
The current world record in the men’s 100m is 9.58s and was set by Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt in Berlin in August 2009.
In the women’s events, Allyson Felix set a world-leading time of 21.98s in the 200m while Jasmin Stowers did with same in the 100m hurdles after crossing the line in 12.35s.
Gatlin was Olympic 100m champion in 2004 but served a four-year ban from 2006 after testing positive for testosterone.
Meanwhile, in the men’s 3,000m, double Olympic champion Mo Farah was edged out by Ethiopia’s Hagos Gebrhiwet who set a world-leading time.
Gebrhiwet took the win after crossing the line in seven minutes 38.08secs, just ahead of Britain’s Farah with 7:38.22.
