DUBAI // Simeon Career Academy of Chicago and Huntington Prep of West Virginia won on Friday to advance to the championship game of the MPAC Sports Elite International Tournament at Al Shabab club.
Ronshad Shabazz scored 34 points and gathered nine rebounds to lead Huntington Prep to a 72-68 victory over the Utah Reign, and Zachary Norvell scored 25 points to help Simeon overpower Montverde Academy of Florida 96-82.
The teams will meet for the championship of the week-long tournament at 5.45pm on Saturday at Al Shabab.
The tournament features four prominent high school basketball teams from the United States, brought to the UAE by event organisers, as well as the MPAC side, made up of players from across the Mena region.
Luqman Rashad, a native of Chicago, is the founder and executive director of MPAC, which runs 49 basketball academies in the UAE, and the tournament is part of a strategy to increase interest in the game in the region. The tournament is supported by the Dubai Sports Council.
DJ Williams scored 20 points and took nine rebounds for Simeon, best known as the alma mater of the Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose, the 2011 NBA most valuable player. Marquez Letcher-Ellis had 15 points for Montverde.
Thomas Bryant, the 208-centimetre centre, contributed 19 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocked shots for Huntington Prep, who overcame an 11-point half-time deficit. Utah was led by the point guard Frank Jackson, who had 40 points. Earlier in the tournament he scored 50.
Simeon defeated Huntington Prep 80-65 in pool play on Sunday, with Norvell scoring 24 points for the winners. The Chicago school has won four of five games in Dubai, and Huntington Prep three of five.
Montverde and the Utah Reign play for third place at 4pm, today at the Al Shabab club.
