ABU DHABI // Sergio Aguero has welcomed the signing of Wilfried Bony at Manchester City, saying the Ivorian will help the club’s push for silverware this season.

Bony completed his transfer from Swansea City last week, in a four-and-a-half year deal reportedly worth up to £28 million (Dh156m). The striker is currently with the Ivory Coast national team at the African Cup of Nations, but will join up with the English Premier League champions directly following the tournament.

Bony, who moved to Swansea from Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem in 2013, was top scorer in England’s top flight through 2014, notching 20 goals in the calendar year. This season, he has found the net nine times in 20 appearances.

At City, Bony will compete for a place in the starting XI alongside Aguero, Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic. Speaking in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday - City are in the UAE capital on a warm-weather training camp - Aguero said Bony’s experience in the Premier League would be key in the club’s title defence. At present, City sit five points behind leaders Chelsea.

“We’re always very happy when we get new players,” Aguero said. “The idea is always that this is done in the spirit of improving the overall performance of the team. Since Wilfried has been playing in England, he should be able to take the pressure of competing in the Premier League. So he will be a very good signing. We’re very thankful for this.”
