Super-bantamweight world champion Scott Quigg extended his unbeaten record on Saturday night before talk immediately returned to a showdown with Nonito Donaire in Dubai.
Quigg, 26, defended his WBA world title with an explosive second round stoppage of former European champion Kiko Martinez in Manchester.
Taking place on the same night, across the Atlantic in El Paso, Texas, Quigg’s rival Carl Frampton announced himself to American audiences with a unanimous points victory over Alejandro Gonzalez.
Talk has been ongoing between the Quigg and Frampton camps over a domestic duel, although so far nothing concrete has been agreed.
Mayweather v Pacquiao and five proposed UAE fights that never happened
And it appears boxing fans will have to wait a little longer to see the two men share a ring, with Quigg in talks over a fight with Filipino star Donaire in the UAE.
Donaire, 32, remains one of the biggest draws in boxing despite defeats to Nicholas Walters nd Guillermo Rigondeaux in recent years, and he is sure to pull in the crowds in Dubai, a city with a thriving Filipino population.
Quigg’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, remains determined to secure the unification bout with Frampton, although Donaire has been lined up as an alternative, with Hearn aware the Filipino can help boost Quigg’s global reputation. The fight has been pencilled in for November.
Indeed, Donaire was also in action this weekend, dispatching Anthony Settoul in the second round of their Macau fight.
