Schalke sweat on the vexing issue of Julian Draxler as Real Madrid come



It was only 26 minutes and it was only as a substitute against Mainz, but it was enough.

When Julian Draxler went down with a tendon injury at the beginning of December, it was thought he would be out until March, but he is back in action after coming off the bench in Schalke's Bundesliga match on Friday, and there is a possibility he could start tonight's Uefa Champions League tie against Real Madrid.

Schalke remain the underdogs, but where there is Draxler there is hope.

It is a ludicrous burden to place on a 20 year old, but Draxler has been dealing with that pressure since he made his debut at age 17 and 117 days, when he came off the bench in a 1-0 defeat to Hamburg in January 2011 to become the fourth youngest player in Bundesliga history.

A week later, against Hannover, he became the second-youngest player – after Nuri Sahin – to start a Bundesliga game.

By the following season Draxler had become a regular. The year after that, he added goals, scoring 10 in 24 Bundesliga starts.

Inevitably, Europe’s giants are circling. Arsenal were strongly linked to him in the January transfer window only for the deal to fall through, because it was said Bayern Munich had suggested they were interested in signing him in the summer.

That issue remains murky: Schalke have revealed Arsenal made a bid of €30 million (Dh151.4m). Bayern, who initially insisted they were not interested, have acknowledged a bid is possible, but the Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer said he believes Draxler will stay at Schalke next season.

Schalke seem to have accepted that Draxler will be leaving at some point.

“It would do Draxler good to spend another year or two with us,” said their chairman, Clemens Tonnies. “But we know we’re not going to be able to keep a super-talented player like Julian at Schalke forever.

“If another club comes in for him, then we cannot block them. That would be unfair. I don’t think he wants to join Bayern Munich, though.”

Draxler, who grew up in Gelsenkirchen, seems in no great rush to leave. “I keep saying Schalke are all about tradition and emotions,” said Schalke’s youth academy director Oliver Ruhnert.

“Every player in our youth academy is talented, but you need the right will and identification, and desire to represent Schalke.” Draxler, he said, has “Schalke in his heart”.

What is striking about Draxler is what a modern player he is. Germany already has a fine crop of all-round attacking midfielders and Draxler fits the mould perfectly – in fact, he is the oldest of Schalke’s fine trident of young creators, along with Leon Goretzka and Max Meyer.

He is not just a creator and goalscorer, he is also well aware of his defensive responsibilities.

This season, according to whoscored.com, he has made 1.8 tackles and 0.9 interceptions per game: in other words, he has regained the ball on average 2.7 times per game.

That means today, if he starts, Draxler is likely to have a key role in looking to unsettle Xabi Alonso and prevent him from setting the tempo from the back of midfield.

Modern creators also have to defend and it is one of Draxler’s key assets that he is willing and able to do that.

Mercer, the investment consulting arm of US services company Marsh & McLennan, expects its wealth division to at least double its assets under management (AUM) in the Middle East as wealth in the region continues to grow despite economic headwinds, a company official said.

Mercer Wealth, which globally has $160 billion in AUM, plans to boost its AUM in the region to $2-$3bn in the next 2-3 years from the present $1bn, said Yasir AbuShaban, a Dubai-based principal with Mercer Wealth.

Within the next two to three years, we are looking at reaching $2 to $3 billion as a conservative estimate and we do see an opportunity to do so,” said Mr AbuShaban.

Mercer does not directly make investments, but allocates clients’ money they have discretion to, to professional asset managers. They also provide advice to clients.

“We have buying power. We can negotiate on their (client’s) behalf with asset managers to provide them lower fees than they otherwise would have to get on their own,” he added.

Mercer Wealth’s clients include sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and insurance companies among others.

From its office in Dubai, Mercer also looks after Africa, India and Turkey, where they also see opportunity for growth.

Wealth creation in Middle East and Africa (MEA) grew 8.5 per cent to $8.1 trillion last year from $7.5tn in 2015, higher than last year’s global average of 6 per cent and the second-highest growth in a region after Asia-Pacific which grew 9.9 per cent, according to consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In the region, where wealth grew just 1.9 per cent in 2015 compared with 2014, a pickup in oil prices has helped in wealth generation.

BCG is forecasting MEA wealth will rise to $12tn by 2021, growing at an annual average of 8 per cent.

Drivers of wealth generation in the region will be split evenly between new wealth creation and growth of performance of existing assets, according to BCG.

Another general trend in the region is clients’ looking for a comprehensive approach to investing, according to Mr AbuShaban.

“Institutional investors or some of the families are seeing a slowdown in the available capital they have to invest and in that sense they are looking at optimizing the way they manage their portfolios and making sure they are not investing haphazardly and different parts of their investment are working together,” said Mr AbuShaban.

Some clients also have a higher appetite for risk, given the low interest-rate environment that does not provide enough yield for some institutional investors. These clients are keen to invest in illiquid assets, such as private equity and infrastructure.

“What we have seen is a desire for higher returns in what has been a low-return environment specifically in various fixed income or bonds,” he said.

“In this environment, we have seen a de facto increase in the risk that clients are taking in things like illiquid investments, private equity investments, infrastructure and private debt, those kind of investments were higher illiquidity results in incrementally higher returns.”

The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds, said in its 2016 report that has gradually increased its exposure in direct private equity and private credit transactions, mainly in Asian markets and especially in China and India. The authority’s private equity department focused on structured equities owing to “their defensive characteristics.”

What is Genes in Space?

Genes in Space is an annual competition first launched by the UAE Space Agency, The National and Boeing in 2015.
