BANGKOK // Qatar is considering an ambitious bid to become the first GCC country to host the World Cup finals, a senior official said. Saud al Mohannadi, the secretary-general of the Qatar Football Association, said that Qatar had "the means and the ability" to host the finals, either in 2018 or 2022 and would make a decision early next year. "We are interested and we believe we can successfully host such a prestigious event as the World Cup finals," Al Mohannadi said.
"We have the stadiums and we have experience hosting top sports events. We don't want to rush into anything, we need to find out what the full requirements are, but we are interested." The FIFA president Sepp Blatter recently said the host nations for the 2018 and 2022 finals would be announced at the same time, with the bidding process for both to be launched in January and decided by December 2010.
The reason, Blatter said, was made to allow countries more time to secure funds and sponsors and complete infrastructure work at a time of global economic recession. Qatar will host the 2011 Asian Cup football finals and have successfully organised events on the global tennis, golf and MotoGP circuits, as well as the 2006 Asian Games, which is widely considered the most successful edition to date.
Earlier this year, with financial backing from the country's ruling family, it launched a bid to stage the 2016 Olympic Games in the capital Doha but failed to get on the shortlist of host cities. Qatar will face stiff opposition from England, Netherlands and Australia, as well as Spain and Portugal, who last week said they would bid to jointly host the finals. China, Mexico, Belgium and Russia have also reportedly shown interest.

Zakat definitions
Zakat: an Arabic word meaning ‘to cleanse’ or ‘purification’.

Tightening the screw on rogue recruiters
The UAE overhauled the procedure to recruit housemaids and domestic workers with a law in 2017 to protect low-income labour from being exploited.
Only recruitment companies authorised by the government are permitted as part of Tadbeer, a network of labour ministry-regulated centres.
A contract must be drawn up for domestic workers, the wages and job offer clearly stating the nature of work.
The contract stating the wages, work entailed and accommodation must be sent to the employee in their home country before they depart for the UAE.
The contract will be signed by the employer and employee when the domestic worker arrives in the UAE.
Only recruitment agencies registered with the ministry can undertake recruitment and employment applications for domestic workers.
Penalties for illegal recruitment in the UAE include fines of up to Dh100,000 and imprisonment
But agents not authorised by the government sidestep the law by illegally getting women into the country on visit visas.
'Worse than a prison sentence'
Marie Byrne, a counsellor who volunteers at the UAE government's mental health crisis helpline, said the ordeal the crew had been through would take time to overcome.
“It was worse than a prison sentence, where at least someone can deal with a set amount of time incarcerated," she said.
“They were living in perpetual mystery as to how their futures would pan out, and what that would be.
“Because of coronavirus, the world is very different now to the one they left, that will also have an impact.
“It will not fully register until they are on dry land. Some have not seen their young children grow up while others will have to rebuild relationships.
“It will be a challenge mentally, and to find other work to support their families as they have been out of circulation for so long. Hopefully they will get the care they need when they get home.”

How Alia's experiment will help humans get to Mars
Alia’s winning experiment examined how genes might change under the stresses caused by being in space, such as cosmic radiation and microgravity.
Her samples were placed in a machine on board the International Space Station. called a miniPCR thermal cycler, which can copy DNA multiple times.
After the samples were examined on return to Earth, scientists were able to successfully detect changes caused by being in space in the way DNA transmits instructions through proteins and other molecules in living organisms.
Although Alia’s samples were taken from nematode worms, the results have much bigger long term applications, especially for human space flight and long term missions, such as to Mars.
It also means that the first DNA experiments using human genomes can now be carried out on the ISS.
