More details to follow.
Manchester United 3
Depay 45’, Rooney 46’, Mata 90’
Sunderland 0
MANCHESTER // Memphis Depay scored his first Premier League goal and Wayne Rooney added his first of the season as Manchester United beat Sunderland 3-0 to go top of the standings on Saturday.
United applied plenty of early pressure at Old Trafford, but only found a way through in the fourth minute of first-half stoppage time.
A 35-metre pass by Daley Blind found Juan Mata at the back post and the Spaniard’s cutback was steered in by Depay, who joined from PSV Eindhoven in June.
Rooney had another United newcomer, Anthony Martial, to thank for his goal, just after the re-start. The French teenager went on a clever run before whipping back a cross that struck Rooney’s knee and landed in the net.
Mata added United’s third in the 90th.
Kane back in form as Tottenham thrash City
Tottenham Hotspur 4
Dier 45’, Alderweireld 50’, Kane 61’, Lamela 79’
Manchester City 1
De Bruyne 25’
LONDON // Tottenham Hotspur pummelled Manchester City 4-1 on Saturday to condemn Manuel Pellegrini’s team to a third defeat in four games and leave them exposed at the Premier League summit.
City took a 25th-minute lead at White Hart Lane through Kevin De Bruyne, but Eric Dier drove home an equaliser on the stroke of half time before Toby Alderweireld’s header early in the first half put the hosts in front.
Harry Kane claimed his first club goal of the season and Erik Lamela added a fourth for Spurs as Mauricio Pochettino’s side followed Juventus and West Ham United in inflicting defeat on the season’s early pace-setters.
Spurs climb to fifth.
Leicester City beaten at home
Leicester City 2
Vardy 13’, 89’
Arsenal 5
Walcott 18’, Sanchez 33’, 57’, 81’, Giroud 90’
LEICESTER // Alexis Sanchez netted a hat-trick to end his scoring drought as Arsenal came from behind to beat Leicester 5-2 Saturday in the Premier League.
Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud also netted for the Gunners, who rediscovered their scoring touch in a free-flowing game that easily could have seen even more goals at both ends.
Arsenal had managed just five goals in its first six league games but matched that total during an entertaining afternoon that saw Sanchez find his best form again. The Chile forward was Arsenal’s leading scorer last season but had been without a goal in a frustrating start to this campaign.
Leicester had the better start, though, as Jamie Vardy put the hosts ahead in the 13th minute by finishing off a quick counterattack and then hit the crossbar with a header five minutes later. That led to a counterattack for Arsenal, with Walcott equalizing after running onto Santi Cazorla’s throughball to slot a well-placed shot inside the far post.
Sanchez did the rest for Arsenal, tapping into an empty net in the 33rd, heading home his second in the 58th and completing his hat trick with a shot from distance in the 81st.
Vardy pulled a consolation back in the 89th and Olivier Giroud added the fifth for Arsenal after coming off the bench.
Mathieu Flamini, who netted both goals in a 2-1 win at Tottenham in the League Cup on Wednesday, was given another start in holding midfield in place of the injured Francis Coquelin. However, this outing was not nearly as successful as he had to go off with an injury after little more than 20 minutes.
But with all three of Arsenal’s main forwards scoring, this game could calm the fears of some fans still angry that Arsenal didn’t add another striker in the transfer window – even though Walcott again missed a number of chances to add to his tally.
Sturridge returns to goalscoring ways for Liverpool
Liverpool 3
Milner 2’, Sturridge 59’, 67’
Aston Villa 2
Gestede 66’, 71’
LIVERPOOL // Liverpool eased the pressure on much-criticized manager Brendan Rodgers following a 3-2 win over Aston Villa on Saturday.
Rodgers’ side was without a league victory since the second game of the season.
Stand-in captain James Milner gave the hosts the perfect start at Anfield when he struck the opener in the second minute, the fastest goal in the league this season.
Daniel Sturridge doubled the lead just before the hour mark, before three goals in five minutes set up a tense finish for Liverpool.
Unmarked Villa striker Rudy Gestede reduced the deficit from close range in the 66th, seconds before Sturridge restored Liverpool’s two-goal advantage after a neat exchange with Philippe Coutinho.
Gestede headed in with aplomb to make it 3-2 but Liverpool held on for the points.
Southampton rout Swansea City at home
Southampton 3
Van Dijk 11’, Tadic 54’, Mane 61’
Swansea City 1
Sigurdsson 83’ (pen)
SOUTHAMPTON // Southampton claimed a welcome Premier League win on Saturday, beating Swansea City 3-1 at St Mary’s as the Welsh club’s recent slump continued.
Virgil van Dijk put Saints on their way early on before Dusan Tadic and Sadio Mane added further goals for the home side, with Gylfi Sigurdsson getting one back from the penalty spot late on for Swansea.
It was just a second Premier League win of the season for Southampton but completed a good week following their 6-0 victory over MK Dons in the League Cup.
Swansea, meanwhile, have now gone four games without a win in all competitions with this defeat coming off the back of a League Cup loss to second-tier Hull City.
In a lively start to the game, Mane fired over and then put another effort wide either side of Maarten Stekelenburg saving from Jonjo Shelvey.
Ronald Koeman’s side then opened the scoring on 11 minutes, James Ward-Prowse crossing from the left and Van Dijk heading in his first goal for the club since signing from Celtic.
Southampton took the lead at home to Manchester United last weekend before succumbing 3-2, but they held onto their lead into the interval here as Stekelenburg saved from Ki Sung-yueng.
Diouf scores to give Stoke City victory
Stoke City 2
Walters 32’, Diouf 83’
Bournemouth 1
Gosling 76’
STOKE // Mame Biram Diouf scored late to give Stoke a 2-1 home victory over Bournemouth on Saturday for its first Premier League win of the season.
Diouf came off the bench to head in a cross in the 84th minute for his third goal of the season, lifting Stoke out of the relegation zone following a disappointing start to the campaign for Mark Hughes’ team.
Jonathan Walters put Stoke ahead with a tap-in from close range in the 33rd minute but Dan Gosling leveled in the 76th with a low shot after the ball fell to him in the area.
Stoke has six points from seven games, one point behind newcomer Bournemouth.
West Ham save blushes with home draw
West Ham United 2
Sakho 33’, Kouyate 90’
Norwich City 2
Brady 9’, Redmond 83’
LONDON // Cheikhou Kouyate rescued a point for West Ham with a last-minute equalizer as the high-flying Hammers drew with Norwich 2-2 in the Premier League on Saturday.
Substitute Nathan Redmond looked to have given Norwich a first win at Upton Park in 26 years with a fine effort in the 83rd.
However, deep into stoppage time, Kouyate bundled the ball home following a goalmouth scramble to secure a share of the spoils.
Earlier, Robbie Brady had fired the Canaries into the lead, before the Irons levelled through Diafra Sakho.
