Not even a record-breaking century by 19-year-old batsman Adrian Barath could save the West Indies from the follow-on at the Gabba yesterday, as Australia's leisurely innings-and-65-run victory moved Ricky Ponting's men 1-0 up in the best-of-three series. "We know the West Indies were probably a long way off their best in this game and there is no opportunity for us to be complacent with what we've achieved," said Australia captain Ponting.
In truth the hosts' 21-year unbeaten streak at the Gabba was never in jeopardy. Having restricted the Windies to 187 in their second innings, Ponting's ruthless pace bowlers ensured his decision to enforce the follow-on for only the third time as captain paid off. "The opportunity to finish the game off was pretty appealing," Ponting said. The Windies' top order was ripped apart by Ben Hilfenhaus. Barath's sublime innings of 104, which saw him overtake George Headley as the youngest West Indian to score a Test century, restored some pride.
